Kanye West's demand for a dome killed his headlining gig at Coachella

Kanye West's demand for a dome killed his headlining gig at Coachella

The John McGuire-designed dome would have been big enough to hold a large portion of the 125,000 festival attendees. What West wanted done would have necessitated the removal of numerous festival's portable bathrooms and when the Coachella execs told this to West, he became "irritated" and said he was, in Billboard's words, "an artist with a creative vision who shouldn't be spending his time talking about port-a-potties".

"He has some great [production] ideas, but we just weren't able to pull them off right now", Coachella co-founder Paul Tollett told Los Angeles Times without going into detail about the dome "I'd like to circle back with him and figure out a future plan of what to do with what's in his head". "These 40x60 stages are so archaic", a source said. Braun had terminated his professional relationship with West in early December, Billboard has learned, marking the second split in 2018 between the mega-manager and the rapper. "Australian rock band Tame Impala was elevated to the top headliner slot in December to replace Justin Timberlake, who dropped off the lineup after his rescheduled tour dates due to bruised vocal cords conflicted with Coachella's radius clause". At one point, he hung up during a phone call with festival organizers.

The two weekend festival takes place in April.

Ariana Grande fans were ecstatic to see their idol announced as a Coachella headliner - but it turns out the star was a last-minute replacement for Kanye West. The reason? Coachella wouldn't build him a giant dome as a stage.

Executives from Coachella promoter Goldenvoice told West it was impossible.

According to editors at Billboard, days before the rapper was due to be revealed as one of the 2019 headliners, he insisted on performing in a custom-built dome in the middle of the festival grounds at the Empire Polo Fields in Indio, California, rather than on the main stage.

Kanye's representatives have declined to comment on the report.
