Storm Erik: Yellow warning issued for Friday

Storm Erik: Yellow warning issued for Friday

Storm Erik is due to hit the coast at around 5.00 am on Friday.

The warning comes into effect at 5am on Friday and will end at 6am on Saturday.

Met Éireann has issued two status orange weather warnings in advance of the oncoming Storm Erik.

A Status Yellow wind warning has been issued for the rest of the country, with gusts of up to 110km/h expected.

Saturday will see the "strongest winds" lashing Northern England too, while coastal areas could be hit by winds as strong as 70mph.

Southwest to west winds will reach mean speeds of 50 to 65 km/h with gusts of 80 to 110 km/h.

The weather service has warned that disruption is possible, with "some delays to road, rail, air, and ferry transport" likely.

'The good news is Sunday will be a less windy day for most of us as Storm Erik moves towards Scandinavia, however it could stay windy for a time in parts of northeast Scotland, ' the Met Office chief said.

Met Eireann is also warning of very high seas and coastal flooding.

In September, the Met Office and Met Éireann revealed the list of storm names for the coming season.
