Former Manchester United star appointed manager of top English club

The former Manchester United was formerly a coach at Old Trafford but this is his first permanent manager position.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has been named the new manager of English League Two side Oldham Athletic.

According to Sky Sports, Scholes will be unveiled to the club fans the same day after which he will hold his first press conference.

Oldham caretaker manager Pete Wild admitted the 3-0 win at Crawley on Saturday looks like his last in charge, with Paul Scholes set to take over at Boundary Park.

Oldham owner Abdallah Lemsagam said: "Paul has won everything there is to win in football".

The Latics, a former club of Bafana Bafana midfielder Dean Furman, are now 14th in the fourth tier of English football.

The 44-year-old is one of the owners of National League club Salford City along with five of his former Red Devils team-mates.

The English Football League gave Scholes the go-ahead last week to take charge of Oldham, ruling that there was no conflict of interest. "It's been a while".

A complication was Scholes' involvement in non-league Salford City, where he is a co-owner along with fellow former United stars David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville and Gary Neville. "I know it's not going to happen every week, but I go into every game expecting to win".
