LONDON: Netflix production "Roma", a cinematic love letter to director Alfonso Cuaron´s childhood in Mexico City, triumphed at the Bafta film awards on Sunday, boosting its Oscar hopes.

Writer-director Alfonso Cuaron's black-and-white memoir Roma was the big victor at the BAFTA Awards ceremony at Royal Albert Hall in London on Sunday. Her co-star Rachel Weisz scooped the Supporting Actress prize, an award for which fellow "The Favourite" star Emma Stone was also nominated.

Mahershala Ali took the Supporting Actor prize for his role in Green Book, set in the segregated US South in the early 1960s.

Looking visibly shaken as she walked up to the stage of London's Royal Albert Hall, the actress - who played Queen Anne in The Favourite - clutched a piece of paper with her notes on what to say.

"Black Panther" won the best visual effects. Best British short film was "73 Cows", while Vice won the best editing.


The 2019 edition has also been tinged by scandal.

This referred to an article in the USA magazine The Atlantic detailing sexual misconduct allegations that included underage sex.

Singer denies the story and the film itself was still up for the award, althought it failed to win it.

Rami Malek took the Leading Actor prize for his portrayal of late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in "Bohemian Rhapsody", adding to his Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award wins for the role.

"Free Solo" - a film about the first person to climb El Capitan in Yosemite National Park without ropes - won the award for best documentary.

"If they do good movies, they should be recognized.I'm very happy that they're embracing diversity.in a time in which the theatrical experience had become so gentrified", Cuaron said on the red carpet about Netflix.

The film to mark the centenary of the end of the Great War was a massive hit in Britain when it aired on the BBC in November.
