Subaru puts some oomph behind the Legacy name with 2020 model

But buyers can still get the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine on lower trim levels, which produces 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque.

The EZ36 six-cylinder boxer and EJ25 turbo four-cylinder engine have been discontinued, leaving the Legacy with the FA24 and FB25.

Thanks to a 13 per cent increase in ultra-high tensile-strength steel, a new full inner frame construction method, and a new-to-Subaru foam-filled crossmember, the seventh-generation Liberty is actually said to be up to 70 to 100 per cent stiffer, depending on which metric you look at. It has tons of new tech, an available punchy turbocharged engine, and a fresh design.

Subaru of America CEO Tom Doll told the new Legacy is "a safe, comfortable, spacious workhorse". The sprint to 60 will take a couple extra seconds with this unit but the tradeoff, Subaru says, will be slightly better city/highway fuel efficiency rating of 27/35 mpg. The current model costs from $22,545 (US price). The lightly-accented wheelarches are one of the few remaining hints of its rally-themed predecessors. Subaru spokesperson Dominick Infante confirmed to C/D at the 2019 Chicago auto show that we can expect to see the new Outback later this year. For starters, it has wider fenders and a higher trunk surface for a more dynamic stance. The Touring is the new range-topping Legacy model, and it comes standard with Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats.

The Legacy will also be available in the United States with an updated version of the 135kW 2.5-litre naturally aspirated flat-four petrol engine, but as we speculated last week, the six cylinder is no more. For the rear, a double-wishbone layout with subframe is used together with coil springs and a new 19 mm hollow stabilizer bar.

All but the base Legacy feature the largest infotainment screen on a mainstream mid-size sedan.

On the inside, a giant new screen dominates the center stack - a tablet-style 11.6-inch HD screen that controls pretty much everything in the auto, including the HVAC system. "Both the Multimedia Plus and Multimedia with Navigation feature two rotary dial knobs, including one for audio volume".

Available safety features include a 180-degree front-view camera system, driver fatigue monitoring, steering-responsive LED headlamps, blind-spot monitoring, autonomous braking in reverse, and rear cross traffic alert. The 2020 Legacy will go on sale this fall in base, Premium, Sport, Limited, Limited XT, and Touring XT trim levels with a number of familiar Subaru virtues intact: standard all-wheel drive, flat-4 engines, and a host of standard safety tech.

The biggest change for the new Outback, then, will be its new underpinnings. Pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date.
