Donald Trump to sign executive order advancing artificial intelligence strategy

United States president Donald Trump wants his country to spend more on artificial intelligence (AI) technology research.

This initiative, which will elevate federal funding for AI research and support USA -led AI worldwide standards, doesn't contain new AI development funding or additional details on next steps, The Verge reported.

It also directs agencies to make data more available to developers, set standards for how technology is developed, and calls for a plan to "preserve America's advantage in collaboration" with allies.

"I am eager to work with you on legislation to deliver new and important infrastructure investment, including investments in the cutting edge industries of the future", Trump said in a White House Office of Science and Technology (OSTP) press statement.

Engage internationally: It will call for a strategy for global collaboration that ensures AI is developed in a way that is consistent with American "values and interests".

There was no specific funding announced for the initiative, the administration official said on a conference call, adding that it called for better reporting and tracking of spending on AI-related research and development.

Establish standards: It will direct the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to create standards that foster the development of "reliable, robust, trustworthy, secure, portable, and interoperable AI systems".

Preparing workers: Agencies will train people to prepare for the changes resulting from AI (such as automaton), through apprenticeships, fellowships and training programs.

Experts in the field of artificial intelligence have expressed growing concern that China is advancing plans for global AI dominance, and that the US needs to catch up.
