Katy Perry-Designed Shoes Pulled Amid Blackface Backlash

Katy Perry-Designed Shoes Pulled Amid Blackface Backlash

Days after Spike Lee, Soulja Boy and Dapper Dan shamed Gucci for its Blackface apparel, Katy Perry's latest shoe line has made the same mistake as the Italian luxury brand.

A line of shoes designed by singer Katy Perry has been pulled from store shelves because critics said they resembled someone wearing blackface.

The singer was called out on the black styles over their similarity to blackface, a racist practice in which white people darkened their skin to represent caricatures of black people. Both feature two eyes, a nose and red lips.

Perry's sources say the shoes were part of a line of shoes that she designed and were never meant to be offensive.

"In order to be respectful and sensitive the team is in the process of pulling the shoes", the insider shared.

Perry posted a photo of the shoes to her Instagram back in August 2018 and received backlash in the comments at that time. "Another fashion house has gotten it outrageously wrong". He revealed he would be having a meeting in Harlem, N.Y., with Gucci CEO Marco Bizzarri to discuss the situation.
