Mohammed Shami charged for dowry and sexual harassment by Kolkata police

"A chargesheet has been filed against cricketer Mohammed Shami under section 498A (domestic violence) and 354A (Sexual harassment)".

Mohammed Shami has been charged with non-bailable offences by the Kolkata Police under Indian Penal Code 498A and Indian Penal Code 354A for dowry harrassment and sexual harrassment, respectively. The charge sheet has been submitted by the Kolkata police on his estranged wife Hasin Jahan's complaint.

A model by profession, Jahan had made headlines earlier in March a year ago when she alleged that her husband, Shami, had abused her physically and mentally and was involved in several extra-marital affairs. She had produced screenshots of Shami's alleged conversation with his girlfriend, who, according to Jahan, he had met in Dubai.

The pacer was first stripped of a contract by the BCCI.

The chargesheet was filed against the fast bowler almost a year after his wife Hasin Jahan lodged a police complaint, levelling multiple charges against Shami and four of his family members.

Shami's wife had even accused him of match-fixing following which he was omitted from the central contracts list by the BCCI pending investigations. However, he was later given a clean chit and has been given a Grade A contract this year.

Jahan had accused her husband of extramarital affairs with a Karachi-based model while also alleging physical torture by the Indian cricketer.

The turmoil in personal had affected Shami's performances on the cricketing field too and he was dropped from Afghanistan Test for being unfit.

Shami was part of the Indian team that lost the five-match ODI series 3-2 against Australia on Wednesday.
