Swedish Environmental Activist Greta Thunberg, 16, Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

A Swedish schoolgirl climate change campaigner has been put forward for the Nobel Peace Prize by three Norwegian socialists. She has since inspired hundreds of thousands to do the same, creating the #FridaysForFuture movement, which has enlisted thousands of young people to skip school this Friday to march for policy action on environmental issues.

The politicians also noted that "We have proposed Greta Thunberg because if we do nothing to halt climate change it will be the cause of wars, conflict and refugees".

Greta Thunberg, in August a year ago, became the face of a "school strike" outside the Swedish parliament building.

Almost 100 schools are expected to participate, Thunberg said on Twitter. She has asked world leaders not to ignore the impending consequences of runaway climate change.

Ms Thunberg tweeted, 'Honoured and very grateful for this nomination (love heart emoji),' to her 261,000 followers on Thursday.

"Greta Thunberg has launched a mass movement in which I see, perhaps, the main contribution to peace". "And we will continue to do so for as long as it takes".

"They talk about our age, our looks and so on", she continued.

How is the Nobel Peace Prize nominated and chosen?

Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai in 2014 became the youngest victor of the prize, at the age of 17.

The Swedish teenager - who on her Twitter page describes herself as "a 16-year-old climate activist with Asperger [syndrome]" - first staged a school strike for the climate in front of the Swedish parliament in August last year. While nominations must be submitted before February 1, news that Thunberg is being considered broke Wednesday.

She continued to gain global attention after speaking at the UN Climate Talks in Poland in December and at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January. The names of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates will be announced that month.
