Many others, including students in Ireland, have joined Thunberg's crusade by striking every Friday.

More than 10,000 people have registered their interest in a Facebook invite for the 'Melbourne School Strike 4 Climate', which is being held at the Old Treasury Building on Spring Street.

Pakistani Malala Yousafzai in 2014 became the youngest victor of the prize, at the age of 17.

"We have nominated Greta because the climate threat may be one of the most important causes of war and conflict", parliamentary representative Freddy Andre Oevstegaard told Norwegian media outlet VG.

"Greta Thunberg has launched a mass movement which I see as a major contribution to peace", he added.

What are the school protests?

The protest is due to start at midday.

While numerous protesters are likely to be university students, a large number are also expected to be high school students.

So far, there have been regular walkouts around the world, including in countries likes Germany, Belgium, the UK, France, Australia and Japan.

Six months ago no one knew who Thunberg was when, as a 15-year-old, she camped outside Sweden's parliament next to a hand-written sign: "SCHOOL STRIKE FOR CLIMATE".

At a World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland, in January, she ended her speech by telling a silenced room that she wants leaders to "behave like our house is on fire, because it is".

National politicians, worldwide officials, academics and previous winners are among those who can nominate potential recipients.

If Greta wins the prize, she will be the youngest person to ever become a Nobel laureate.

The prize is announced in October and awarded in December in the Norwegian capital, Oslo.

There are 301 candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize for 2019, out of which 223 are individuals and 78 are organisations, says the Nobel committee on its website.

The list of nominees is kept secret for at least 50 years, in line with the Nobel Foundation's statutes.
