English success in Champions League could make Nations League 'mess' - Southgate

English success in Champions League could make Nations League 'mess' - Southgate

However, Tottenham were outclassed by Real Madrid at the Bernabeu (4-0) in the first-leg of the quarter-finals, then lost 1-0 back in London.

It was also a display of muscle-flexing by City, Liverpool and Spurs that will have been noted by the likes of Barcelona and Juventus, the two continental heavyweights most likely to stand in the way of an English triumph in the final in Madrid on June 1.

Jose Mourinho has claimed he hopes to see some English pairings in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Although they won't say so publicly, behind closed doors Barcelona players are quite sure about who they would rather face in the quarter finals of the Champions League, after seeing off Olympique Lyon this week.

"I think if the draw gives something like Manchester City versus Manchester United, or Tottenham against Liverpool, for example, I think would be absolutely fantastic matches".

"My second choice would be not by tactical or emotional reasons but by what I think would be fantastic extra motivation", said the 56-year-old.

When he was told after the 3-0 win, which secured a 3-2 aggregate victory for the Italians, that Juve had never managed such a comeback in the Champions League, Ronaldo said, "Maybe that's why they signed me".

"It would be wonderful for Portugal as a country, Netherlands as a country, to have a team in the semi-final".

However, Mourinho feels a potential meeting between Juventus and Barcelona will come too soon at this stage.

"Two great teams, who haven't been successful in the Champions League in the last few years".

When asked to pick his outright victor, Mourinho said: "I always say, when you get to the quarterfinal, everyone has the feeling, 'I have 12.5 percent chance of winning'".

"And it's not like any of us have had easy teams to play against".

A nice spread of interest in the other four teams there, in fairness.
