NFL Free Agency: Patriots hosting WRs Bruce Ellington, Maurice Harris

The Detroit Lions snapped Ellington up just a few days after he was cut by Houston.

The Patriots entrance into free agency hasn't been dramatic but the team continued adding to the roster on Thursday by reportedly signing wide receiver Bruce Ellington.

NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported Thursday that free agent wideout Bruce Ellington is going to sign a one-year contract with the Pats.

The latter was pegged as a potential free agency option for Bill Belichick due to his skill set and potential for value on a low-priced signing. He's caught 79 passes for 769 yards and five touchdowns in his career with the 49ers, Texans and Lions.

Ellington is another option in the slot at 5-9, 200 pounds but he's battled hamstring injuries throughout his career.

Harris, who went undrafted out of Cal in 2016, spent the last three years with the Washington Redskins.

Ellington isn't an overwhelming talent, but he is experienced and fills a role in the slot. The Super Bowl champions didn't have a deep group of receivers last season and have been linked to targets at the position. The one question mark with him, and it's a big one, is health and durability.

Ellington seems like more of a Patriots-type signing at this point. But he has at least some idea of how the Patriots' system would work and he's the kind of receiver that plays to Tom Brady's strengths.
