Toyota adding 450 jobs at Huntsville facility

Toyota adding 450 jobs at Huntsville facility

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky announced Thursday it will invest almost $280 million at its Georgetown plant, and new vehicles will soon be made at the facility.

First, a $111 million investment will bring 123 jobs to the plant in Buffalo and double its transaxle production. "Doubling our production of hybrid transaxles in West Virginia solidifies our facility's role in producing next generation engines and transmissions that will drive the future of Toyota's advanced mobility technology".

Employees are building 2,600 engines a day. "The new engine lines will allow us to respond quicker to customer needs and strengthen our competitive edge in the industry". It is the only Toyota plant in the world that produces 4-cylinder, 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder engines under one roof. Last year Toyota and Mazda announced plans to build a $1.6 billion joint-venture plant in Huntsville that will eventually employ about 4,000 people.

Lentz told reporters the automaker is eager to find out the findings, including for the 137,000 Americans he said design, build or sell Toyota vehicles in the United States.

"And that's going to require us to do an expansion for the 6-cylinder line", Fernandes said.

Other city and state leaders joined mayor Tommy Battle at the announcement.

Alabama Secretary of Commerce Greg Canfield, says Alabama's automotive sector is a success story that happened quickly.

Toyota's latest announcement is an add-on to a plan first announced in 2017.

Toyota Motor Corp. says it is investing an additional $750 million at five US plants that will bring almost 600 new jobs.

"We are proud to add such a significant cost investment to Toyota West Virginia - not only financially but also in adding team members to the Toyota family", said Leah Curry, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, West Virginia, Inc. president.

Toyota Bodine announced Thursday morning that they will invest $50.1 million in their Jackson facility. The company is funneling $288 million into the Huntsville plant.

The plant has expanded several times since it went online in 2001.

But, business being business and politics being what they are right now, it also seems likely that Toyota's expansion of its U.S. production is a show of allegiance to the powers that be in hopes of staving off increased tariffs on the goods that it imports from Japan.

"Toyota's major new investment in its Alabama engine factory is a testament to the solid partnership we have formed with the automaker and to the high-caliber workforce it has found in the Huntsville area", Gov. Kay Ivey said in the Toyota press release. Officials from the company say literacy is a fundamental part of career preparedness.
