Winter X Games coming to Calgary in three-year deal

Winter X Games coming to Calgary in three-year deal

The Games could be held in Calgary for a three-year stretch from 2020 to 2022. "The X Games features more than 200 world-class athletes, many of whom live and have trained here in the province, competing in a variety of skiing and snowboarding events and numerous young athletes, both on the slopes and on the stands, will go on to represent Canada at Olympic Games and beyond", said Miranda.

The Winter X Games is held over a four-day period and hosted by ESPN. "This supports travel and tourism, it supports economic development, it supports spin-off businesses like restaurants and hotels through the community".

Hosting the X Games would bring significant economic benefits to Calgary, with a Wednesday news release saying it could bring an estimated $75 million in annual economic activity, 75,000 annual spectators and more than 10,000 out-of-region annual visitors.

WATCH: Ward 1 Coun. "Bringing the X Games to Calgary will boost the city's and Alberta's legacy as a winter sports destination".

Ward 1 Coun. Ward Sutherland told Global News they hope Calgary could become the full-time home of the event. "We want to be a two-event city... so we'd have the Stampede during the summer and the X Games during the winter".

Today, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, was joined by the Honourable Sandra Jansen, Minister of Alberta Infrastructure, His Worship Naheed Nenshi, Mayor of Calgary, and David Sibbald, President and Chairman of the Board, Calgary Stampede, to announce funding for the expansion of the BMO Convention and Trade Centre in Calgary.

Hosting concepts have been approved for venues at Stampede Park and WinSport. "It's about brining Calgary to a world stage".

Securing the rights was a almost decade-long undertaking on the part of Tourism Calgary, who will now work alongside Manifesto Sport Management and Insight Productions to deliver the events. "Canadian athletes have a rich tradition of high-level performance at X Games events and to bring the X Games to their backyard would be awesome".

"Not only would the games introduce a new audience to Calgary, it would also inspire the next generation of athletes watching from the grandstands".

CALGARY-One of the world's top action and extreme sports events could soon come to Calgary, as the city has secured exclusive rights to host the Winter X Games for a three-year run.
