Golden Tate Reportedly Down to Patriots and Steelers in Free Agency

Showtime Tate is the best.

Tate agreed to a contract with the Giants on Thursday, his agency announced on Twitter.

"The Giants take a $16 salary cap hit in dead money with the trade of Beckham but gained $5 million in cap relief in 2019 after taking Beckham's $16.75 million base salary off the books", writes Schwartz.

Golden Tate is not coming to the Patriots. The addition of Tate, combined with sure-handed running back Saquon Barkley, fellow wideout Sterling Shepard and downfield tight end Evan Engram, means Manning should plenty of reliable options at his disposal.

Since acquiring a second first-round pick in a trade that sent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.to the Cleveland Browns, even more mock drafts have projected Haskins to the Giants.

Gettleman took the conservative approach to the first three days of free agency as the rest of the National Football League went on a spending spree.

So the decision to add Tate is a bit of a head-scratcher other than to say Gettleman truly believes he can win and rebuild at the same time.

Tate reportedly was seeking somewhere between $11-13 million a season, but the Giants were able to get Tate for reasonably less as he approaches his 10th season. He didn't come cheap, either, as the Giants signed him to a four-year, $37.5 million deal.

Originally drafted by the Seahawks, Tate had four straight seasons of at least 90 catches from 2014-17 with the Lions, topping 1,000 yards in three of those seasons.

Tate spent last season with the Lions and Eagles, and he'll now be joining Big Blue.

He's a good player and he deserves to be paid like one, but the signing is still confusing.
