Need stressed for raising awareness about kidney diseases

The event was held under the theme "Kidney health for everyone, everywhere". CKD or Chronic Kidney Disease is a progressive disorder where the organs fail to work to their full potential.

Unfortunately, most of the kidney is already damaged by the time the symptoms of kidney diseases appear.

Experts at SIUT said that there was sharp increase in the number of people affected by kidney diseases to an estimated 850 million people.

Keeping fit helps to reduce your blood pressure and therefore reduces the risk of chronic kidney disease.

She added that approximately one in three adults with diabetes and one in five adults with high blood pressure could have chronic kidney diseases.

In India the prevalence of this disease has nearly doubled in recent years and is expected to increase due to the various risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, stress, obesity and other unhealthy eating habits.

"So, we think that prevention is always better than to wait for the disease to occur and we start looking for money to get treatment". "During the screenings we can detect persons who have high levels in these areas and have them referred to a doctor on site for further checks".

She added that many types of kidney diseases can be prevented, delayed or kept under control when appropriate prevention measures are in place.

"We will be screening everybody, from old to young, male and female, because everybody is prone to having kidney disease as long as the risk factors are there".

Health organizations organize this campaign globally to spread messages about kidney diseases, complications, and prevention and cure all across the countries.

Braimoh, however, advised the general public to adopt the culture of seeking medical advice before taking any medication such as herbs.

Water helps the kidneys to flush out the toxins from the body, and thus, less water intake leads to the wastes remaining in the kidneys, thus debilitating them.

"Also, abuse of pain relievers can damage the kidney, especially the ones in the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory group. Today they have the opportunity to do so".

"Most people here do not have the financial capability to take themselves to the hospital for treatment or screening, but this outreach has brought that service down to our people".

"Go and get checked as soon as possible", she said.
