The Netflix Doco On Maddie McCann Makes Claim That She's Still Alive

A controversial new Netflix documentary series argues that Madeleine McCann might be still alive in Portugal, almost 12 years after she was snatched while her parents had dinner with pals.

On the eve of its release, Netflix has dropped the trailer for true-crime documentary series "The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann". Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were having dinner with friends at a restaurant about 180 feet away from the apartment.

The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann will blend interviews from 40 contributors in never-before-heard testimonies with existing interviews, archival footage, and re-enactments in an attempt to piece together the circumstances surrounding Madeleine's disappearance and the subsequent investigation.

"Madeleine's Fund", which Kate and Gerry set up to raise money for the investigation, has been supported by a number of celebrities including Philip Green, Simon Cowell, Coleen Rooney, J.K. Rowling, and Richard Branson. In addition to looking in to the facts of Madeleine's disappearance, the show also examines the way the case was treated in the media. But it does tease possible updates in her disappearance and story.

She has since been the subject of numerous headlines, podcast episodes, books, and now the Netflix documentary.

Two people viewers won't be hearing from directly in the series are central to the case: Madeleine's parents.

Senior child protection officer Jim Camble, who features in "The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann", believes the truth about what happened will come out in his lifetime.

The McCanns previously released a statement distancing themselves from the series.

Madeleine McCann's disappearance shook the world into horror, disbelief, and confusion. Their spokesperson told The Guardian: "Kate and Gerry didn't ask for it and don't see how it will help the search for Maddie on a practical level, so they chose not to engage". "Consequently, our views and preferences are not reflected in the program".
