3 dead, 7 injured in fire in Bangkok shopping mall

The blaze has since been extinguished, but smoke still needs to be released from several floors of the complex, the AP cited the fire department as saying shortly before 8 p.m. He said at least seven other people were injured. One of them was pronounced dead at the scene and the other at hospital.

Hospital and police officials could only confirm two fatalities.

Flames and smoke from the blaze at a documents storage room on the eighth floor of the hotel was visible from a distance, sending people dashing to the hotel's parking space in panic to get their cars out.

Local media showed video of one person jumping from smoked-filled window to escape the fire.

Thai media reported that at least one of the people who died had jumped from one of the complex's buildings.

The Central World complex comprises a mall and several tower blocks, one of which contains a hotel and another of which contains offices. "A fire alarm started to ring and there were announcements on the PA system telling people to evacuate". Thick black smoke was seen billowing out, and explosions were heard.

The area around Central World is a shopping haven and was chock-full of tourists and rush-hour traffic.

Emergency rescue teams gather outside of the Central World mall complex, Wednesday, April 10, 2019, in downtown Bangkok, Thailand.

The mall typically would have been busy with shoppers as well as diners headed to the many restaurants inside. It in turn is a division of the family-owned Central Group holding company.
