Man sets himself on fire near White House

The White House was placed into lockdown after a man on a wheelchair scooter lit his outer jacket on fire on Pennsylvania Avenue.

NBC's local affiliate said a suspicious package was found near the man.

"Media trying to cover security incident with Secret Service keeping everyone back", she wrote.

The man was taken to an area hospital, where he was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

"Uniformed Division Officers immediately responded, extinguished the fire and rendered first aid".

A nearby block of 17th Street was closed as well, and at least portions of the White House complex were locked down.

Fire officials are now said to be investigating the suspicious package.

The incident occurred shortly after Trump spoke at the White House about the nation's 5G network.

Nicholas Kristof, of the New York Times, added: "Someone apparently set himself on fire in front of the White House just now".

A man who tried to set himself on fire outside the White House on April 12 has been arrested.

Photos posted by CBS News correspondent Mark Knoller showed four uniformed officers carrying the man in the aftermath of the incident.

The Washington, DC Fire Department is reportedly treating the man for minor injuries.
