English Premier League: Newcastle move closer to survival with win over Leicester

Ayoze Perez eased Newcastle's relegation fears as the Magpies ended their away win drought at Leicester.

Leicester, looking to secure a European spot next season under new coach Brendan Rodgers, had striker Jamie Vardy back.

"We're still very professional and know we can get even better and carry on the same way".

But their hopes began to fade and James Maddison curled a free kick over with 15 minutes left. Watch on Sky Sports Premier League, Sky Sports Football and Sky One from 10am. "The players will be disappointed".

The Toon have two favorable matches coming up on the schedule against Southampton (17th) and Brighton (16th), but before we look ahead, let us discuss what we learned against Leicester City yesterday.

The Magpies had numerous chances to get a second goal, but also never seemed like conceding a goal as they restricted Leicester to a lot of passes around the box.

A 32nd minute header from Ayoze Perez was enough to clinch the victory for the visitors, as the Foxes failed to break down Newcastle's solid, well-organised defence. "It's something we will go away and reflect on and hopefully be better and take into the next game".

Leicester stayed in seventh place, tied on points with Wolverhampton Wanderers having played two games more. We have been working for just over four weeks, they are a great group of players that will get better. "If you come in during pre-season then it's all quite nice and then the season starts". In the first half we were too slow with the ball, whenever you play against that type of team that defend deep you have to be quicker and cleaner through the defensive lines and I don't think we did that quick enough.

The signs are positive for the left-footed ace and he should be much better next season after a full pre-season under his belt, but it's definitely an area of his game he needs to improve. His free kick was nearly spectacular, but his hold up play and his linking things together was just what the Magpies needed away from home.
