Facebook down for users globally, WhatsApp, Instagram affected too

The social network's handling of user data has been a flashpoint for controversy since it admitted a year ago that Cambridge Analytica, a political consultancy which did work for Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign, used an app that may have hijacked the private details of 87 million users.

A map on the site showed the UK, US and large areas of Europe are affected by the connection issues.

Can't load your Facebook or Instagram page?

Needless to say, users have been flooding rival social media sites like Twitter to express their disappointment, or to have a little fun with the issue. Either users couldn't access the platform, or their feeds refused to refresh.

While they're working for some users, others are reporting that Facebook and Instagram are both inaccessible.

Separately, Downdetector.com also showed that there were issues with WhatsApp and Instagram, but with relatively lower count of outage reports.

This is a developing story.
