Trump says he will award Tiger Woods the Presidential Medal of Freedom

President Donald Trump has announced on Twitter that he plans to award the golfer with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The president is an avid golfer who played a round with Woods at Trump's golf club in Jupiter, Florida, in February.

The medal, the nation's highest civilian honor, is bestowed by the president to individuals deemed to have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

There were questions about his ability to win a major tournament, but those have all ended following the Masters victory. George H.W. Bush presented the medals to Nicklaus and Palmer; Barack Obama to Sifford.

Trump didn't say when a ceremony will be held. In 2018, he gave medals to football players Roger Staubach and Alan Page and a posthumous award to baseball player Babe Ruth.

Trump's assessment then of Woods' game was spot-on, with the president predicting that Woods would "be winning majors again".

The victory for Woods at Augusta represented an epic comeback, almost 11 years after his last victory in a major tournament. He first won the tournament in 1997 at 21 years old, the youngest person ever to do so, and captured three more green jackets by 2005.

And Trump tweeted about the Masters several times over the weekend, writing on Sunday afternoon that Woods was "a truly Great Champion!"
