Alexander Ovechkin knocks out Andrei Svechnikov

Alex Ovechkin fights Carolina rookie Andrei Svechnikov during the first period of Game 3. Svechnikov, a Russian scoring winger, had said earlier in the series that Ovechkin is someone he looked up to growing up.

During tonight's game three matchup with the Carolina Hurricanes, Washington captain Alexander Ovechkin chose to drop the gloves with Andrei Svechnikov.

Svechnikov was down on the ice for far too long and had to be helped off by medical trainers.

It was the first-ever National Hockey League fight for Svechnikov, who was selected second overall by the Hurricanes in 2018.

Ovechkin sent Svechnikov to the ice with a heavy right hand, and the 19-year-old needed assistance to get to Carolina's locker room.

It was Ovechkin's first fight since December 12, 2010 when he got involved with Brandon Dubinsky.

Both players received 5-minute fighting majors.

The Hurricanes later announced that Svechnikov wouldn't return to the game due to an upper-body injury.

Washington leads the series, 2-0.

"[Ovechkin] just told me good luck in the draft and you will go high", Svechnikov told Sporting News of their meeting in June.
