Leafs head home looking to regroup with Kadri's status in limbo

The key word being was. Things won't come easy for the Bruins in this one though as they have struggled to find a way to win in recent trips to Toronto as they are 2-7 in their last 9 trips to the Ontario capital and they are just 1-5 in their last 6 playoff games as an underdog which are two trends favoring the Buds in this one.

The Maple Leafs have reached the postseason in each of the last three years. At the 14:03 mark of the third period, Kadri cross checked Boston Bruins forward Jake Debrusk in the throat area.

That line put in a solid 20 minutes in the first period, creating some good scoring chances, and was rewarded in the second.

The real issue started near the end of the second period. Kadri is starting to get quite a rap sheet. "Kadri stayed down. That's his prerogative". He did return for the final frame.

DeBrusk then went after Leafs defenceman Travis Dermott near the benches, punching the rookie blue-liner repeatedly in a sequence that didn't result in a penalty. It's pretty clear at this point that playing in a third-line role behind John Tavares and Auston Matthews was a transition that was hard for him to make. Debrusk would catch Patrick Marleau with a hit along the sideboards.

He is an incredibly valuable player to the Maple Leafs.

Kadri was assessed a hooking penalty late in the period, and as he raced to get back in the play, took a knee-on-knee hit from DeBrusk. At the time of the penalty, the 28-year-old had scored to get the Leafs to within two goals.

Given his all-around play he is an absolute steal under the salary cap on a team that needs every possible steal it can get given its contract situation at the top of the roster. "He's a guy that plays a 200-foot game for us". However, a player that could receive six or more games is offered an in-person hearing with the DPOS.

Here's Kadri's suspension history.

Babcock said if Kadri, who has already been suspended four times in his career, is indeed forced to the sidelines, either Nylander or Marleau will move to centre on the third line behind Matthews and Tavares.

Matt Grzelcyk of the Boston Bruins is separated from Nazem Kadri of the Toronto Maple Leafs during Game 1 of the Eastern Conference First Round during the 2019 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs at TD Garden.

Brad Marchand and Charlie Coyle scored during a raucous first period as the Boston Bruins downed the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1 on Saturday to even their first-round playoff series at one game apiece.

Kadri and DeBrusk had a running battle throughout Game 2. He could receive a suspension of five games or more.

After a highly contested Game 2, @Matt_Grzelcyk5 discusses keeping the intensity up for the remainder of the series: "It was obviously really intense".

"That first 10 minutes, they were physical, tried to make a statement", Leafs centre Auston Matthews said.

The Maple Leafs meanwhile perhaps deserved a much better fate in their Game 2 loss to the Bruins as they had some ugly goals given up but at no fault to Frederik Andersen who was absolutely spectacular in the Maple Leafs crease.

Kadri has the right to appeal through the NHL Players' Association to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.

They should be looking to trade him this offseason.
