South Africa, rallying from a 19-point deficit, won for the second time in three tournaments while Canada finished tied for 11th on Sunday at the Singapore Rugby Sevens.

Playing without the injured Jerry Tuwai, the Fijians struggled as they again went down 17-7 to South Africa in their final pool play.

"Olympic qualification would mean so much", said US captain Madison Hughes.

The top four finishers in the end-of-season standings will secure Olympic berths. It was a lofty goal at the time but now we're really close to it.

"Even in the Scotland game, we were after everything, we just didn't get the breaks, and that happens in rugby".

Australia looked impressive in beating group rivals Argentina, France and Hong Kong but struggled for possession against the slick English. Against South Africa, we showed great endeavour and some huge amount of work and we were able to capitalise on some of the pressure positions we put ourselves in - that was very good as well.

Reigning Olympic champions Fiji triumphed in Singapore a year ago, but had a mixed opening day.

Despite letting the Singapore title slip away on a weekend where Fiji also suffered defeats by Scotland and South Africa in pool play, Gareth Baber's side closed the gap on overall series leaders the U.S. to just three points with two rounds to play in London and Paris, with England beating the Americans 28-7 in the bronze playoff.
