Microsoft's Surface Buds Will Be Another Apple AirPods Killer

Microsoft's Surface-branded true wireless earbuds are reportedly in the pipeline to take on Apple's AirPods. The new headphones will directly compete with AirPods, according to sources familiar with the company's plans who talked to Thurrott.

Microsoft's Surface headphones and their carrying case.

In addition to the Surface Headphones, which were officially launched a year ago, the software giant is now working on its very own earbuds that would technically be positioned as an alternative to Apple's AirPods and other similar devices already on the market.

The device is being developed as part of a secret project, codenamed 'Morrison, ' and could be coming as soon as later this year.

The Surface Buds will likely come with Microsoft's AI assistant, Cortana, integrated into them, meaning users would be able to control the device with their voice.

Apparently, Microsoft wants to cover the two "major categories" of headphones: over-ear and in-ear. He says "a way to improve interactions between a phone and the earbuds to make reading content easier on the phone" could be on tap as well.

It's not year clear how Microsoft intends to differentiate its earbuds from others that are now available from competitors.

Microsoft's Surface Headphones are over-ear headphones, which means that they fully encompass the ears for better comfort and isolation. The same applies to Amazon, which is also reportedly working on its own AirPods competitor as a way to get Alexa into more people's pockets.

Microsoft's just one of many company's jumping on the "true wireless" train.

Sams believes a 2019 launch is plausible but not guaranteed; we'll have to wait and see.
