Extinction Rebellion 'disappointed' by Gove

Climate change lawyer Farhana Yamin also praised a pledge by Mr Gove to discuss citizens' assemblies with London Mayor Sadiq Khan, and a promise to raise the group's demands with other members of the cabinet.

"The fact that Michael Gove can not even commit to declaring a climate and ecological emergency at the moment is not only a political failure, we believe that's a moral failure on behalf of our politicians", said Sam Knights, a 22-year-old Extinction Rebellion activist after the meeting.

"I'm pleased with discussions that took place today and that we were met at the appropriate level", said Savannah Lovelock, a coordinator of the youth wing of the movement, after meeting Gove and McDonnell on Tuesday.

Labour's policy is for Britain to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, compared with Extinction Rebellion's 2025 deadline.

But Sam Knights, who works on Extinction Rebellion's strategy team, said the refusal to declare a climate emergency was "not only a political failure, but a moral failure".

Extinction Rebellion held two weeks of protests, causing chaos around London with rolling road blocks and protests on top of Docklands Light Railway trains. Scotland's Green Party has criticized Sturgeon's government for moving too slowly on climate change.

A rally was combined by oscar-winning celebrity Emma Thompson by the Extinction Rebellion protesters in London.

Extinction Rebellion is demanding the government declare a climate emergency and to allocate resources to tackling the issue.

This month saw Extinction Rebellion carry out street protests and roadblocks which saw 1,130 arrests in London over Easter. The British people need to know the reality of what we face.

The group says climate breakdown threatens all life on Earth, and so it is rebelling against politicians who "have failed us", to provoke radical change that will stave off a climate emergency.

"There is a real feeling of hope in the air that after several decades of climate campaigning, the message is beginning to sink in".
