From Spain: Barca 'suspect' Liverpool 'tempting' Ajax star to join this summer

Even before this season, De Ligt was one of the most highly-rated young players in Europe and was discussed as a possible target by United.

The 36-year-old pundit was speaking on BBC and he said that the 26-year-old England global was much better than the 19-year-old Ajax captain.

Frenkie de Jong agreed a move to Barcelona in January and it still appears likely that de Ligt will join him at the Nou Camp next season.

While talking about his future, he also had a few words about the league title, as Ajax are already virtual champions of the Dutch League: "It's not confirmed mathematically, but if we continue to do our thing, we will be".

When asked about the Catalan club's interest, he said: "I don't know yet".

"I don't see de Ligt doing anything Maguire can't do".

"There have been conversations, but there is still no agreement".

Barcelona are apparently concerned that Liverpool could use the allure of playing alongside Virgil van Dijk to sign Ajax wonderkid Matthijs de Ligt ahead of them.

Earlier this week, Ajax sporting director Edwin van der Sar told Sky Sports Italia that De Ligt would move to a club in either Spain or England.

The 19-year-old defender amassed a lot of attention from the big clubs after displaying exceptional performances.

However, another former Liverpool player Steve Nicol doesn't think Jurgen Klopp will sign the defender and our very own Seb Stafford-Bloor reckons the Reds should give the summer transfer market a swerve altogether. Of course you want to learn from him. He plays for Liverpool.
