Free Next Day Shipping From Walmart

Free Next Day Shipping From Walmart

Unlike Amazon, which limits free one-day delivery to Amazon Prime members, the Walmart offer will be available to anyone, without the need for a paid membership.

The free NextDay delivery offers 220,000 frequently-purchased items like diapers, laundry detergent, electronics and toys. That's almost double the number of items it carries in its stores.

US retail giant Walmart announced Tuesday that it will provide customers with free next-day delivery covering hundreds of thousands of "most frequently purchased" items. In coming days, it will expand to southern California.

Walmart is rolling out next-day delivery beginning in Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Southern California, with plans to reach approximately 75% of the USA population this year. More products will be added as time goes by. Though it was not immediately made clear if those facilities would be used specifically for the NextDay offers launching this week, Walmart previously said they would be used to support faster local shipping times, including one-day deliveries. Amazon has declined to say when the switch will happen, but it already offers one-day delivery for some items in certain areas. "We're trying to get ahead of that". It is available on eligible orders of $35 or more, with the specific assortment varying by customer location.

After coyly hinting about a major shift in its shipping policies, Walmart has filed the latest salvo in the retail wars, announcing free one-day shipping starting this week. We're adding free NextDay delivery on a wide range of general merchandise from Walmart.com, without a membership fee.

According to Walmart, NextDay will actually be less expensive for the company, since items will come from a single fulfillment center closest to the customer. "This means the order ships in one box, or as few as possible, and it travels a shorter distance via low-priced ground shipping", he says. Walmart is also trying to limit costs by tailoring products based on what shoppers demand in the local markets.

Still, Walmart sells far fewer products than Amazon and its online USA sales are only a fraction of Amazon's online global merchandise empire.

Walmart e-commerce chief Marc Lore, who came over via the acquisition of Jet.com in 2016, wrote in a blog post that Walmart has been working on the plan for awhile. But, the most exciting development has been the creation of Grocery Pickup and Delivery.

Amazon essentially is telling its employees it will pay them to quit and start hauling packages.

Walmart has one big advantage over Amazon - its more than 4,700 stores. Walmart has also been expanding the use of robots in its stores, which keep tabs on what's on and not on the shelves.
