Elton John and 'Rocketman' touch down in Cannes

John, an executive producer of the film, hadn't spoken much about the movie before it made its premiere at Cannes.

Screening of the film "Rocketman" out of competition - Red Carpet Arrivals - Cannes, France, May 16, 2019.

On Thursday night, Rocketman, the biopic about John's life starring Egerton, premiered to applause, cheers and a standing ovation at Cannes. He stood out too at the film's photo call, where he sported a powder blue suit and matching glasses.

The 72-year old, who underwent surgery on his knee last year, was seen to be visibly limping on his way up the red carpet and opted against climbing the steps to the Palais des Festivals.

But it also celebrates some of John's enduring friendships, including with Bernie Taupin, who penned the lyrics to his greatest hits, including "Your Song", which helped propel the singer into superstardom.

The movie, starring Taron Egerton, tracks the singer's first steps in the music business, from his tentative tryouts on the piano as a child to his explosion onto the USA scene and its drug and alcohol-fueled party world. It will look at the performer's life past the glitter saturated image we have grown so accustomed to associating with the performer.

Following the film's premiere, the guys headed to the after-party, where John took the stage to perform "I'm Still Standing".

Rocketman isn't so dissimilar from Bohemian Rhapsody. "You're actually doing the whole thing", he told Egerton in an interview with Beats 1 radio.

Rocketman is released in United Kingdom cinemas on 22 May, with a U.S. release following on 31 May.
