Grumpy Cat has died: The internet's favourite moggy passes away, aged 7

"Some days are grumpier than others", Grumpy Cat's publicist said in a statement on Friday, sharing news that the internet's favorite meme star has died.

The cat's real name is Tardar Sauce, and her permanent scowl is a result of her having been born with dwarfism and an underbite.

The post goes on to say that the feline "has helped millions of people smile all around the world - even when times were tough".

Tardar Sauce, as Grumpy was known to her family, rose to fame in 20212 after her photograph was posted on Reddit.

In addition to Grumpy Cat blowing up on social media - she had almost 2.5 million followers on Instagram at the time of her death - she also made many media appearances throughout her life and was an official spokesperson for Friskies.

"Her spirit will continue to live on through her fans everywhere", she said.

In 2014, Lifetime produced a movie called "Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever".

Fans could buy Grumpy Cat socks, or an endless choice of tee-shirts emblazoned with ennui-filled slogans such as "Your face.I hate it" or "I don't care what you think, I'm napping".

Tardar Sauce is survived by her mom Tabatha, and fellow family members Bryan and Chyrstal.

Since then, Grumpy Cat made appearances on "Good Morning America", "CBS Evening News", even "American Idol" and "The Bachelorette". So, although the face that launched a thousand memes is gone, it's likely the cat's image isn't going anywhere.

During her years in the limelight, she accumulated 8.3 million total followers on Facebook, 2.4 million followers on Instagram and 1.5 million followers on Twitter.

Rest in peace to the one and only Grumpy Cat, who died at seven years old on May 14.
