PGA Championships: Koepka seizes command with 63 while Woods struggles

"I understand a lot more about my misses, where to hit it, and major championships I just suck it up".

At times during Thursday's first round, the extended layoff, which included skipping out on Wednesday's practice round because he felt sick, seemed like a mistake.

Spieth's best finish at the PGA, the one major he hasn't won, came in 2015 at Whistling Straits when he finished second to Jason Day, who wasn't going to be beaten by anyone that weekend. "They were in my favor, and I always consider myself pretty lucky wherever I go that I get really good support".

"My calf is kind of knotted up where it was torn, so I've got to keep working on it to try to loosen it up so it doesn't tear again", Perez said after his round.

Woods has not played competitively since the Masters, making this only the sixth time in his career he has played back-to-back majors.

The 43-year-old USA superstar opened with a double bogey at 10, added another at the par-3 17th and despite a 30-foot eagle putt at the par-5 fourth was unable to challenge Koepka after bogeys on three of the next four holes. "I think I'm still learning, understanding my game, and I've figured it out, and I think over the next few years, I'm excited for what's to come".

"I sure wouldn't be surprised if he was still there on Sunday".

"We expect over 200,000 spectators, 1,100 jobs created around this event, an estimated $120 million impact, so not only is it a great sport and history and a great event it's also good business for Long Island", says Cuomo. Woods hit over the green, then faced a downhill chip that left him with an 8-foot putt for bogey.

Koepka also shot 63 past year at Bellerive in St. Louis on his way to a two-shot victory over Woods. The golf schedule has been reworked with an eye toward wrapping up the season in August before the football season gets started.

Koepka was in a star-studded threesome with Tiger Woods and Francesco Molinari.

Woods, who won his 15th major title last month at the Masters to snap an 11-year major win drought, was one stroke under the cut line with hopes of clawing back the gap to Koepka.

"My goal in turning was try and get to a few under for the championship", Spieth said.

England's Rose, third-ranked Koepka and fourth-ranked Rory McIlroy could all overtake Johnson with a victory, with McIlroy and Johnson set for afternoon starts and Rose opening with a bogey at the 10th.

"I think that was probably the highest score he could have shot today", Woods said. Only two have gone on to win: Jack Nicklaus in the 1980 US Open and Raymond Floyd in the 1982 PGA Championship. "But I never once thought about the course record or anything".

"I know my family is sacrificing out there for me to chase my dream out here", he said.
