Tesla's Autopilot was in engaged before Model 3 hit truck, says NTSB

The second was on March 23, 2018 in Mountain View, California, involving a Tesla Model X; a lawsuit filed against Tesla by the family of the victim of that crash alleging Autopilot defects was announced earlier this month.

In a 2017 report on the Gainesville crash, the NTSB wrote that design limitations of Autopilot played a major role.

"The driver engaged the Autopilot about 10 seconds before the collision", the report stated. Neither the preliminary data nor the videos indicate that the driver or the ADAS executed evasive maneuvers.

The Tesla Model 3 after being recovered following the crash. Therefore, they suggest it's not necessarily correct that the driver removed his hands from the wheel 10 ten seconds before the accident.

The Tesla was travelling at a speed of 68 miles per hour when it hit the trailer.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said the tractor trailer pulled into the path of the Tesla, and the Tesla's roof was sheared off as it passed underneath the semi.


The auto drove beneath the trailer, killing the driver, in a crash that is strikingly similar to one that happened on the other side of Florida in 2016 that also involved use of Autopilot.

NTSB investigators are also probing how the electric Tesla's batteries behave after accidents following several fires.

The accident, the latest involving Autopilot, left the Tesla driver, a 50-year-old male dead and the combination vehicle driver uninjured. A final, conclusive report will be released at a later date. One report, issued after another fatal accident in Florida, said, "Contributing to the auto driver's overreliance on the vehicle automation was its operational design, which permitted his prolonged disengagement from the driving task and his use of the automation in ways inconsistent with guidance and warnings from the manufacturer". The agency said that Tesla told Model S owners that Autopilot should be used only on limited-access highways, primarily interstates. It's possible to have one's hands on the wheel without applying force. In April, his family filed a lawsuit against Tesla in a California state court, alleging negligence on the part of the electric vehicle maker.

Tesla said in a statement Thursday that Banner did not use Autopilot at any other time during the drive before the crash.

In response to the NTSB preliminary findings, a Tesla spokesperson in an email Thursday said, "We are deeply saddened by this accident and our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy". The vehicle did not detect the driver's hands on the wheel for eight seconds.

Tesla further noted that its drivers have logged more than a billion miles with Autopilot engaged, and that drivers supported by Autopilot are safer than those without the systems' assistance. "For the past three quarters we have released quarterly safety data directly from our vehicles which demonstrates that".
