Here's What You Need to Know About Tomorrow's Blue Flower Moon

A blue moon is the second of two full moons in a month - but it can also be the third of four full moons during a single season.

According to the Library of Congress, a blue moon occurs when a particular season has four full moons rather than the typical three. 2019's Spring astronomical season contains four full moons, with May's full flower moon being the third; this is the Blue Moon that you will get to see this year.

It would stand to reason that the fourth full moon of a season would be known as the blue moon. Less than 4 hours later, the first full moon of spring arrived.

"In 2018 unusually, we had two blue moons in one year and only two months apart - and one was a lunar eclipse".

The blue moon only occurs every two-and-a-half years.

As indicated by EarthSky astronomers, the last regular blue moon was on May 21, 2016.

This is a full moon.

Other names for May's full moon phase are Corn Planting Moon, Mother's Moon, and Milk Moon, the last of which comes from the Old English "Rimilcemona", which means Month of Three Milkings, when cows were milked three times a day.

May's full moon likewise has a few different nicknames.

The Farmers' Almanac tells us there is a blue moon coming up on Saturday.

Every full moon of every months has a specific title.

Is a blue moon really blue?

Finally, can you or can't you miss the Blue Moon? Summer flowers begin to bloom in May which is why it is called a Flower Moon. The term was coined after rare events in the past in which dust in the atmosphere made the moon seem blue.

Speaking of rarity, though, it's important to note that the rarest Blue Moon is one that actually looks the color by which it's named. As per the United States space agency, the Krakatoa volcanic eruption that happened in Indonesia in 1883 sent plumes of ashes into the skies, and it turned the moon to blue colour for quite some time.
