Rooney says Ronaldo, Messi and Bale are not answer for United

Rooney says Ronaldo, Messi and Bale are not answer for United

Record scorer Rooney says his old club should be patient, however, and build for long-term success at home and in Europe rather than plot a quick and expensive fix.

Solskjaer has a busy summer ahead of him and sources have told ESPN FC there could be as many as five players arriving.

With Phil Jones and Chris Smalling looking well off the pace in the Premier League, this young defender could get his chance in the big league next season.

United endured one of their most disappointing seasons to date this year, finishing sixth in the league and not coming close to challenging for any other silverware.

What many are dubbing as the Solskjaer's "project" has already got underway, with Swansea winger Dan James joining the club for £15m once the worldwide transfer window opens next week.

Harry Maguire, James Maddison, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Ryan Fraser, Declan Rice, Ryan Sessegnon, Sean Longstaff and Nathan Collins are some of the players United are interested in, but the club have so far been put off by what they consider to be vastly-inflated.

"I think he needs to try and look at maybe five or six players who have got potential to be top players but you're not spending £120-130m on these players".

"He's better spending £30million to 40million on players with potential and building the squad around those five or six players".

"You could bring three players in - you could bring in Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos and [Lionel] Messi, or Gareth Bale for instance - and it's going to cost you £300-350m".

United have not won the title since the final season of Sir Alex Ferguson's reign in 2013.

"It's down to teams like United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham [Hotspur] and possibly Everton in the next two years to get to the level of Liverpool and Manchester City".

"I just think the club needs to rebuild with younger players", he added.

He was a consistent first-team player for the Irons racking up 29 appearances, but if he can't quite cut it in one of the lowest levels of English football, how is he going to perform in the Premier League?
