Crowds run away from DC's Pride Parade after alleged gunshots

Ashley Smith, the president of Capital Pride Alliance, which puts on the event, said he saw people running toward him from Dupont Circle.

"As the officers were going to that scene there was a crowd of people running away from it", Rivera said.

The seven people taken to hospital had non-life-threatening injuries which were received during the panic, police said.

Aftabjit Singh, 38, was arrested on weapons possession and disorderly conduct charges after Saturday evening's incident in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C., where thousands of people packed the streets to celebrate in the city's annual pride parade.

A man is due to appear in court after allegedly causing a stampede at a gay pride parade in the USA which left seven people needing hospital treatment. He said the police apprehended a man with a handgun but there was no evidence that shots were fired.

Spectators quickly began to flee Dupont Circle after hearing loud "pop pop" noises they believed were gunshots.

As the officers got closer, someone in the crowd pointed to Singh and said he had a gun in his bag.

A police report - cited by the Associated Press news agency - said he took the weapon out after noticing someone "hitting his significant other".

"We can not allow this incident, until we know all the facts of it... to ruin the pride celebration going on this weekend", said Ashley Smith, president of Capital Pride Alliance, which organizes the annual event.

He said the group spent extensive time planning security procedures. USA Today quoted her saying that the fire department personnel were on the scene to treat minor injuries due to the reports of a shooting.

Duffy, whom police identified as "suspect 1", was contacted after Singh's arrest.

The man, named in United States media as Aftabjit Singh, allegedly sent the crowd running through the streets of Washington, DC, on Saturday after wielding what appeared to be a gun.
