Gujarat on alert as Cyclone Vayu nears

"Cyclone Vayu has turned into a very severe cyclonic storm".

Total 47 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and 11 teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed.

"We had earlier planned to shift only those living in kutchha (thatched) houses but in the wake of forecasts that the cyclone could be severe, made a decision to shift all the people in coastal villages", Rupani said.

"Thirty six teams have been pre-positioned/deployed at Kutch, Morbi, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Dwarka, Porbandar, Gir Somnath, Amreli, Junagarh, Bhavnagar, Vadodara, Valsad, Surat and Gandhinagar, while four teams have been pre-positioned at Diu for prompt response", the NDRF said.

"Mobile communication vehicles have also been positioned at nodal points and communication support groups have also been formulated at the air bases in Gujarat to handle potential contingencies", the South Western Air Command headquarters of the Indian Air Force said.

Total 10 districts and 408 villages of the Saurashtra region of the state are likely to be impacted.

Gujarat Chief Secretary said approximately 2 lakh 80,000 people from vulnerable areas along the coast will be evacuated from today.

Sardar Sarfraz, the department's spokesperson, said that the cyclone is 700 kilometre away from Karachi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday advised people in his home state to follow real-time information being given by local agencies to stay safe.

Air passengers to and from the megapolis had a tough time Wednesday as almost 400 flights were affected due to bad weather caused by the cycle Vayu which hit the neighbouring Gujarat coast, according to an airport official.

"Praying for safety and well-being of all those affected by Cyclone Vayu".

India's Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the preparedness of relevant state and central ministries to deal with Cyclone Vayu and its aftermath.

The IAF has also positioned the medium lift and light utility helicopters at nodal points in the State to undertake the disaster relief operations.

Diving and rescue teams and relief materials have been kept on standby for rendering assistance to civil authorities, as required, another official said.
