The draft decision was supported by 28 countries, including India and 15 countries voted against and five abstained.

Besides India, among the countries that voted in favor of Israel are Brazil, Canada, Colombia, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Ukraine, United Kingdom, and the United States.

Following the voting, Shahed's application was turned down by the Council.

A truce mediated by Egypt, Qatar and the United Nations ended that round of violence.

"Israel is seeking to create a state of security and political chaos with a view to creating an atmosphere to pass the USA peace plan, known as "deal of the century" the ministry said in an announcement.

Asked what the USA position on settlement activity is, a State Department official cited President Donald Trump, saying that "as the President has said, while the existence of settlements is not in itself an impediment to peace, further unrestrained settlement activity doesn't help advance peace".

"The ambassador, the secretary and everyone who is involved in the Middle East peace plan, in this entire administration, is working towards a comprehensive and lasting peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians", she continued.

India has previously held a position on the two-state theory under which New Delhi sees both Israel and Palestine as separate and independent countries, seeking to bring peace in West Asia.

India has also always played a proactive role in garnering support for the Palestinian cause in multilateral fora. In March, Israel designated Shahed as a terrorist organisation for its links to Hamas and the Iranian-inspired Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ).

"If Prime Minister Netanyahu makes good on his promise to annex West Bank settlements, he should know that a President Buttigieg would take steps to ensure that American taxpayers won't help foot the bill", Buttigieg said.

"Thank you India for standing with Israel in United Nations and rejecting the request of terrorist organization "Shahed" to obtain the status of an observer in United Nations", tweeted Deputy Chief of mission at the Israel embassy in Delhi Maya Kadosh.
