U.S. Open 2019

U.S. Open 2019

Young, who just graduated from Wake Forest, plans for this to be the first of many U.S. Opens he'll play in once he turns pro after this summer.

Dustin Johnson is also among the favorites after finishing second in the first two majors of the season and his feeling with Pebble Beach could play into his hands.

Rahm is yet to win a Major title but as well as watching videos of Woods winning in 2000, the 24-year-old picked the brains of Phil Mickelson during a practice round on Tuesday, Mickelson having won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am for a record-equalling fifth time in February.

"And if I've learned one thing about the U.S. Open overall these years, it is [that] your distance control has to be spot on".

With a win, Koepka can become the seventh golfer in history to win three U.S. Opens.

"He gave me a Raptors jersey and I gave him my putter and thought he was going to give it to [my caddie] up at the scoring area", said McIlroy. Anderson won his three from 1903-05. He's played with professionals before, but it's been in a U.S. Open qualifying, not in any big event like this.

Most of the attention is on Koepka and his bid to go back-to-back-to-back. "If I need to do whatever you need to tell me, I'll do it".

"These greens are so small, you can nearly put it in the center of every green and have 20 feet, no matter where the flag stick is". You've still got to hit it close, and you still have to make putts. He and Woods were not on good terms after they separated in 2011, but Williams spoke highly of Woods after he won the Masters last April and Woods was complimentary if not overly sentimental about his time with Williams when asked this week.

"How you put the ball in the correct position is key".

"If you are only as good as your last major-and, in respect of Koepka, your last couple of US Opens-then he is the man to beat".

Woods tees off at 2:09 pm alongside former US Open winners Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose.

Mickelson can join the company with which golf fans are more familiar - Woods, Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen are the only players to win all four of the modern majors.

History is against McIlroy claiming his first major title since 2014 however, with no player having ever followed a PGA Tour victory with another at the US Open.

"It is not lost on us this is an important week, not only for golf, this is an important week for the USGA", executive director Mike Davis said at a news conference Wednesday, the day before this year's national championship starts at Pebble Beach.

"If you look at the length of this golf course, and it's obviously not one of the longest golf courses that we play all year, but there's so many approach shots, if you do drive it well, between sort of 130 and 150 yards, obviously there's some approach shots that are much longer than that as well, but I just wanted to give myself every possible option in terms of yardages and shots that I could play".

"What's not to like".
