Angels lay Tyler Skaggs jerseys on mound after combined no-hitter

The Los Angeles Angels couldn't have given Tyler Skaggs a better tribute.

On Friday, the day before what would have been his 28th birthday, every Angels' players wore Skaggs' No. 45 jersey.

The Angels and Mariners all stood solemnly on the Big A field while Skaggs' mother, Debbie, delivered a heartbreakingly flawless strikewith her first pitch.

"For us, it's emotionally therapeutic", said Heaney, Skaggs' best friend and fellow starting pitcher.

In between those two melancholy, magical moments, the Angels played their heavy hearts out in their first home game since their beloved pitcher's death.

Pena got some help in the sixth inning when third baseman made a diving stop to glove Mac Williamson's grounder and throw him out at first.

The Angels then proceeded to play their heavy hearts out in their first home game since their beloved pitcher's death.

It's also the first combined no-hitter thrown in California since the Baltimore Orioles held the Oakland Athletics hitless on July 13, 1991, according to STATS - which happens to be the day Skaggs was born. "But for a lot of us, seeing each other again is nice".

A fan memorial outside the front entrance continues to grow.

Prior to the game's triumphant conclusion, however, the Angels paid special homage to the late pitcher.

"He's the life of the team, honestly", said Cozart, Skaggs' teammate for the past two seasons.

"In a sense, it did open up the wounds a little bit, because it reminded us of the reality that Tyler is gone, we really miss him, and we would rather have him here", Angels manager Brad Ausmus said. And whether we notice or not, we kind of do the same stuff every single day. "We're going to do what we can to honor him". Most of the Angels saw the memorial in person for the first time when they returned from a hard road trip and the ensuing All-Star break.

"I think guys will become emotional again, because it is still very fresh", Ausmus said. "That's fine. We're human beings". Whether you're his teammate, part of his family, or just a fan like the rest of us, there's no forgetting what you're seeing right now. Forty-five (Skaggs' jersey number) will always be in my mind.
