SC orders status quo on resignations of rebel Karnataka MLAs

Days after the BJP gained a majority in the Goa assembly, the BJP has reportedly made a decision to dump the Goa Forward Party by directing its ministers including Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai to resign.

"Jennifer Monserrate, the wife of Atanasio "Babush" Monserrate, will be sworn in as minister, as will Filipe Nery Rodrigues", Michael Lobo, the deputy Speaker of the Goa Assembly, had told NDTV over the phone. The three GFP ministers who have been asked to resign are Vijai Sardesai, Vinod Palyekar, and Jayesh Salgaonkar and the Independent MLA is Rohan Khaunte. The Chief Minister held deliberations with Shah and other senior leaders of the party over the likely reconstitution of his cabinet.

Sources in JD (S) said Kumaraswamy is in direct talks with at least four Congress legislators, who have resigned, and was hopeful that they would withdraw their resignation. "I have given them the instructions as per the orders from my high command", Mr Sawant was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

"As the BJP has already poached about a dozen legislators to destabilise our coalition government for its "operation kamala", we have moved about 50 of our party members to Clarks Exotica Convention Resorts on the outskirts of the city", Congress spokesman Ravi Gowda told IANS here. "We have taken this decision to give good governance to the people", he said. The legislators joined the ranks of the saffron party amid protests from Congress leaders outside Parliament over the political crisis unfolding in the state along with Karnataka. Solution? Ask Italians & progeny to leave. "I am not here to sit in power, I appeal to you that in light of the developments I want to move a trust motion".

The party had formed government in a post-poll alliance with 37-member JD (S) in May a year ago after the Assembly polls threw up a hung House.

With the induction of 10 out of 15 Congress MLAs in the state, the BJP's strength has gone up to 27 in the 40-seat Goa assembly.

However, the discord within the BJP was clear soon after the party welcomed the Congress legislators.

The Supreme Court on Friday restrained the Karnataka Speaker from deciding on the resignations and possible disqualification of 10 rebel ruling coalition MLAs, ordering "status quo" till further orders from a Constitution bench that would decide the larger issues involved.

The cabinet reshuffle in Goa comes as the Congress-JDS coalition in Karnataka struggles to survive after the resignation of 18 lawmakers.
