Amazon Music Unlimited is growing faster than market leaders Spotify and Apple

While it is possible to play music through rival services on Alexa, the default is Amazon Music. Apple services head Eddie Cue recently revealed that Apple Music has about 60 million subscribers.

Amazon Music Unlimited has been making huge strides as of late.

"Amazon is the dark horse [in music]", Midia Research analyst Mark Mulligan told the publication.

Amazon Music is still relatively new in the music streaming market, but they're showing incredible growth in their short time around.

Spotify and Apple Music are the two music streaming services that tend to get the lion's share of attention - partly because of the obvious fact that they also have the lion's share of paying subscribers and arguably a better product than alternatives.

The comparison to those rivals is the FT's angle however: that Amazon Music's growth is outstripping that of Spotify and Apple Music. But its competitive pricing structure as well as the popularity of the Alexa voice assistant are also contributing to the rapid growth of subscribers.

Amazon grew its Music Unlimited streaming service by over 70 percent in the past year, according to data by Midia Research published by the Financial Times.

Spotify and Apple Music are facing increasingly tougher competition from Amazon when it comes to adding new paid subscribers to their services.

As part of their Back to School promo, Apple is offering students 6 months of free Apple Music, which is double the free trial period for non-students. "For the industry to reach its full potential", said Amazon Music vice president Steve Boom, "we can't just look at 15- to 22-year-olds".
