Manhattan power outages crippling subway service in Big Apple

Authorities scrambled to restore electricity to Manhattan following a power outage that knocked out Times Square's towering electronic screens and left businesses without electricity, elevators stuck and subway cars stalled.

The Upper West Side of the Manhattan borough of NY is dark after a transformer fire caused a power outage and left businesses without electricity, elevators stuck and subway cars stalled.

As darkness fell just before 9 p.m. (0100 GMT), people on the Upper West Side had to use their mobile phone flashlights to negotiate normally brightly lit streets.

Photos circulated on social media showing the iconic sign of Radio Music Hall unlit, movie-goers evacuating from Lincoln Center's cinema and the sprawling Columbus Circle subway station without lights.

The MTA is working to keep service moving by having trains bypass affected stations.

It took place on the anniversary of the 1977 "Blackout" power cut that affected virtually the entirety of NY in the midst of an economic crisis.

Coincidentally, Saturday's power outage struck on the 41st anniversary of the 1977 blackout, which lasted until July 14.

The Fire Department of NY said it was responding to multiple calls of people stuck in elevators.

New York, citing the Con Edison power outage map, reports over 44,000 customers are without power.

Several Broadway shows canceled their Saturday night performances, including Hamilton, Hadestown, Aladdin, Frozen, Ain't Too Proud to Beg and The Cher Show.

The singer Jennifer Lopez said on Twitter she would reschedule her show after her performance was cut short. "More information to come", the NYCT Subway tweeted on Saturday.

A significant power outage is being reported in parts of Manhattan tonight.

People in Hell's Kitchen began directing traffic themselves as stoplights and walking signs went dark.

Even parts of New York's famed Times Square billboards have gone dark. MSNBC is back on the air thanks to a backup generator, but most of 30 Rock is dark.
