This brings the total to 16 human cases this year, with 11 having had the more serious, neuroinvasive form of the illness.

Schroeder said flooding in 2017 promoted the spread of West Nile.

West Nile is a mosquito-borne virus that is usually asymptomatic, but causes side effects including fever, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea and joint pain in about 20% of people who are infected.

In Sacramento County, dead birds found in Elk Grove, Herald, Carmichael, Elverta and Sacramento's Pocket neighborhood have tested positive for the virus, and positive mosquito samples were found in Herald, Elk Grove's Sheldon Heights community, south Sacramento, just west of Sacramento International Airport and near Diablo Park in Sacramento County. In response, there have been truck-mounted abatement treatments in the area to prevent mosquitoes from spreading the disease in humans.

Boulder County Public Health and Longmont officials urge residents to take necessary precautions to protect themselves.

The California Department of Public Health reported that one person has died from the disease in Imperial County.

Most endemic arboviral diseases are nationally notifiable and are reported by state health departments to CDC through ArboNET, the national arbovirus surveillance system, using standard surveillance case definitions that include clinical and laboratory criteria. There were no EEE virus positive mosquito samples identified in Westborough in 2018.

West Nile virus activity became widespread enough in Davis a year ago that officials with the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District briefly considered aerial insecticide spraying over the city in mid-August.

Unusual clusters of dead birds can be reported to the B.C. Interagency Wild Bird Mortality Investigation at 1-866-431-BIRD (2473).

Avoid outdoor activities at dusk and dawn. At home, look for holes in screens or windows that allow pests to get indoors. These times are when mosquitoes that can carry the virus are most active. Health care providers can only treat the symptoms to help patients feel better and possibly recover more quickly.
