El Paso shooter 'targeted Mexicans': cops

During the investigation, the suspect said that he had used an AK-47-style gun and brought multiple magazines containing ammunition from Texas to carry out the mass shooting, Garcia wrote in the affidavit.

"I'm the shooter", the affidavit, which was seen by Efe news on Friday, quoted Patrick Crusius as saying when he surrendered to police after pulling over and exiting his auto at an intersection near the Walmart that was the scene of the massacre on August 3.

A police affidavit released Friday said the suspect, Patrick Crusius, confessed to the shooting after getting out of his vehicle and surrendering to police, saying, "I'm the shooter". The detective added that Crusius said his targets were "Mexicans".

A manifesto proclaiming white nationalist and racists views believed to be written by Crusius was posted on 8chan, an online messaging board, less than 20 minutes before the first 911 calls came in.

The US was rocked by two back-to-back shootings last weekend - in El Paso and in Dayton - with the incidents occurring just a few hours from each other. He has been charged with capital murder and is being held without bond at the El Paso County Detention Facility. It was unclear where Crusius was heading, though Allen has suggested that he did not know the area well and got lost in a neighborhood upon arriving.

Authorities said Crusius drove 11 hours from his hometown of Allen, Tex., near Dallas, to perpetrate a massacre in the predominantly Hispanic city of El Paso.

He met victims and emergency staff but faced protesters who say his rhetoric is fuelling the kind of racism that may be behind the El Paso attack.

Stevens, a veteran criminal defense attorney from San Antonio, said he will only represent Crusius in state court and declined to comment further on the case.

Trump said that there is no justification for the killing of innocent people. "Our organization has long enjoyed a wonderful following from the people of El Paso, and our wish is that so many others in Texas and around the country will be inspired to assist the loved ones who are grieving".

Federal authorities have said they're treating the shooting as a case of domestic terrorism.

During the Gilroy shooting, six days before the El Paso attack, a gunman killed three people before fatally shooting himself.
