Paul Pogba addresses links with a move away from Manchester United

Frank Lampard's team was totally routed by Manchester United 4:0, with the latter kick-starting the 2019-2020 season so brilliantly thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and new signing Daniel James. We will have to learn harsh lessons and correct them pretty quickly.

Yet, Chelsea steadied themselves as the first half wore on and should have at least been level by the break.

"There were lots and lots of elements to the game that I liked, there were four or five elements that I didn't like and they were fatal for us".

In his first outing at The Theatre of Dreams in a United shirt the most expensive defender in world football put on a solid display, keeping Frank Lampard's attacking Chelsea at bay.

"It's a great start for myself and obviously the team", he told Sky Sports.

"In the first half, we were dominated in terms of chances and possession, but we reacted in the second".

That's about as good as it got for Lukaku at Old Trafford, but it was still a good season for United, who went on to finish second - even if they were still a whopping 19 points behind Manchester City. We gave the ball away in risky areas.

The 41-year-old Lampard handed starts to youngsters Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham, back at the west London club after loan spells in the Championship (second-tier), with American Christian Pulisic on the bench, and his side started brightly.

Marcus Rashford fired United in front against Chelsea when converting a penalty that he won following a foul by Kurt Zouma. He and Scott McTominay couldn't get on the ball and when they did, they lost it. Pogba's second half was superb.

But the game turned decisively in United's favour when, after a Rashford led counter-attack, Martial bundled in a low cross from Andreas Pereira.

Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka were both making their home debuts as Manchester United players and both had their name sung loud and proud by the Stretford End.

In the 81st minute, James collected the ball from Paul Pogba on the right wing and after originally hesitating with his shot, beat Kepa Arrizabalaga at his far post via a deflection.

Earlier this year, Pietersen had asserted that Manchester United is the second-best team in Manchester and that their arch-rivals Manchester City is the best in the Premier League itself.
