Red Bull promotes Alex Albon - demotes Pierre Gasly!

Pressure had been building on Gasly, with many in F1 circles speculating that Red Bull's patience would not last after the Frenchman retired from the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Despite looking promising, Albon's rookie year hasn't exactly been stellar, as he's so far been out-performed by his current teammate Daniil Kvyat at Toro Rosso.

While Albon has certainly had a few moments to forget this season, his ability to hang tough has won him plenty of fans. The British-born Thai driver has scored 16 points from his 12 Grands Prix to date, with a best result of sixth in the rain-affected German round - his first ever wet F1 race.

"Red Bull are in the unique position of having four talented Formula One drivers under contract who can be rotated between Aston Martin Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso", stated Red Bull in a press release on Monday. Now, it's Pierre Gasly who'll be returning to his former team, with former F2 runner-up Alex Albon set to team up with Verstappen for the remainder of the season.

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing has announced that junior bull Alex Albon will replace Pierre Gasly at the Milton Keynes-based outfit from the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix at Spa. Gasly has also impressed at Toro Rosso in 2018, and in hindsight, driving for RBR is a bit more demanding in every aspect than making ends meet for the B-team from Faenza, Italy.

Gasly has managed just 63 driver points so far in 2019 with no podium finishes compared to Verstappen's five.

Although Christian Horner told reporters after the Hungarian GP "our intention is to leave him in the vehicle until the end of the year", the Red Bull boss added that "we desperately need to see him realising more of the potential of the auto".

"Everyone at the team looks forward to welcoming Alex and supporting him during the next phase of his F1 career".
