W Series victor is ready to climb ladder towards F1

Miki Koyama's spin triggered a safety auto, closing up the pack and once clear, there was a final charge to the finish. Meanwhile, Finnish driver Emma Kimilainen finished second Sunday. Beitske Visser was her closest challenger in the title fight but could only finish third in the final race and ended the season ten points adrift of the first-ever W Series champion.

That put Visser on Chadwick's tail and the Dutchwoman overtook her with three minutes left after a breathtaking passage of wheel-to-wheel action during which the pair made contact. The six points that Hawkins scored were enough to lift her from 14th in the championship to joint 11th with America's Sabre Cook (USA), who finished ninth today, thereby earning both drivers positions in the all-important top 12 for the season, which guarantees them both participation in the championship again next year.

"To be the inaugural W Series champion is simply unbelievable". It'll sink in soon I'm sure, but it hasn't yet.

Chadwick said that was a big plus for the series' credibility, making the dream of Formula One much more attainable for female racers.

"Every race, every championship you go into you want to win, but this one especially in its first year and for everything it's managed to generate for me".

Winning the W Series secures Chadwick a $500,000 prize payout, created to aid her progression in the next level of motorsport. After that I just wanted to bring the auto home. Having already been signed as a development driver for the Williams Racing Formula One team, the young Brit clearly has a strong future ahead of her.

"I think a lot of people have started to change their minds about it and see it for what it is and what the W Series are trying to do".

Chadwick felt the reality, with the series always stating it wanted to prepare women to take on the men in junior series such as Formula Three and Formula Two, had changed some preconceptions.

'I definitely didn't make that easy for myself but, fingers crossed, we can take this on to bigger things'. Next year, the W Series victor will also get points.
