The Little Mermaid Harry Styles Casting News Was Premature

The Little Mermaid Harry Styles Casting News Was Premature

Harry Styles was amongst the top contenders to take on the role of Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid.

Styles would have starred opposite actress and Grammy-nominated artist Halle Bailey, who will play Ariel.

However, The Wrap reports that "individuals with knowledge of the project" said that while the 25-year-old pop idol "is a fan of the project", he "respectfully declined" Disney's offer.

Some of The Little Mermaid's rumoured cast include Javier Bardem as Ariel's father, King Triton, and Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina as Ursula, Flounder and Scuttle. We'll see. Now that Styles is out, feel free to start fan-casting Prince Eric! While The Little Mermaid would have been a more lighthearted role, it wouldn't have been easy, since it would most likely require him to sing and act.

Production of the film directed by Rob Marshal is set to begin early in 2020.

The original version of The Little Mermaid follows Ariel, a teen mermaid who dreams of living on land and marrying Prince Eric. No stranger to musicals, or working for Disney, Marshall was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director for his feature film debut, Chicago.

Harry Styles is known for his time in the popular boyband, One Direction and he also played a minor role in Christopher Nolan's war drama, Dunkirk as Alex.

Last month, Collider and the Hollywood Reporter simultaneously broke the news that Styles was "in early talks" to tackle the role after missing out on the plum part of young Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann's upcoming Warner Bros. movie co-starring Tom Hanks.
