Tropical storm Erin downgraded but expected to soak Atlantic Canada starting Thursday

Puerto Rico could see flash floods, and heavy rains are expected in the Bahamas and Florida.

The AP reports: "At 11 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, Dorian was located about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southeast of St Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands".

Dorian had maximum sustained winds of about 60 miles per hour Wednesday morning, prompting hurricane watches in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the center reports.

If the storm's current track holds, Dorian could be "the strongest hurricane to hit Central Florida in over 30 years", said Glenn Richards, meteorologist for FOX 35 in Orlando. Tropical Storm and Hurricane Watches are expected to be issued over the next 24 hours.

Forecasters have said that Dorian could continue to grow in strength as it approaches the USA - the latest, tentative forecast predicts it could be near Florida at hurricane strength by Sunday or Monday.

In the British Virgin Islands, Gov. Augustus Jaspert said crews were already clearing roads and inspecting infrastructure by late Wednesday afternoon. It's expected to continue in that direction for the next couple of days, moving over the Atlantic east of the Bahamas and possibly hitting Florida.

"Dorian will likely be a very formidable hurricane as it approaches late Sunday into Monday morning", CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen said.

The Atlantic monster is a "big concern" for the Floridian megacity but will first ravage Puerto Rico later today - which has only just recovered from the devastating impact of Hurricane Maria two years ago in which almost 3000 people died. The worst was expected from Wednesday afternoon to early Thursday before the storm pulls away.

The strength of Dorian remains in question after it moves across these islands.

One man died after falling from the roof of his house while cleaning a drain in preparation for the storm, Puerto Rico Public safety Secretary Elmer Roman said.

San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz tweeted back, saying that Trump needs to "calm down get out of the way and make way for those of us who are actually doing the work on the ground".

But Tropical Storm Erin is coming for your Wednesday night commute.

However, he noted the storm's track won't be clear until after it moves over Puerto Rico, and passes Hispaniola. A cold front moving across the eastern USA will tap into its moisture and bring heavy rain to eastern New England, including Boston, late Wednesday, Accuweather's Douty said.
